I haven’t tried this yet, but I would like to give students an allotted amount of bathroom passes that can add up to extra credit if they hold on to them. When it comes to using the bathroom decisions decisions they will have to make.

I need to know the nitty gritty about what grades are the toughest for a hopeful future teacher to want to teach. I’m 30 and have held a BS Degree in criminal justice and minor in forensic science for 5 years now. I had planned to go to law school after quitting my job at the jail, because of her. I had just found my soulmate and now 4 years later we are expecting our first! Ive just had this. feel this calling to teaching since I found out. I have always enjoyed showing anyone things I find fascinating and teach them about things so that when the go home and finally fall asleep they will dream of the adventures of all who have come from before their times. #History Class

Taking a team approach usually works best. Although I have called home in the middle of class during independent work and saw almost immediate improvement for most kids the few times I've strategically done it.

I love this. I know its YEARS old, but thank you. I taught two years at the same school under two different admin. The second one made it clear she didn't like me or anyone who was strong and would ask questions. Though, every single bit of feedback, formal and informal, was positive. At the end of the year, she red me my notice of non reelect. I was crushed. When I asked for feedback about why, she said she was "not obligated" to give me reasons. This is when I knew it was personal and had nothing to do with my ability as a teacher. Still, its hard not to beat yourself up, especially when you don't know where you need to grow. I totally agree for me, this was a blessing in disguise. I feel defeated but your video helped me a ton ❤ appreciate you, sir

So I will start teaching Span 1 in a high school in Aug 2024. Im a career switcher, but still have my other license in a medical profession. Ive subbed here and there, and tried 4 months in a middle school with the same subject 3 years ago but didnt finish the school year for various reasons. I wanna do this becasue I love all languages and culture, but Im still feeling a little scared. I pray a lot because I know God has led me here. Teaching is a hard profession where you give sooo much of yourself. I just want to have life balance, and have students leave my class differently than when they came, and sprinkle in some spanish at the same time. Your videos are very helpful :)

This was my first year teaching, and for me it has been a mid-life career shift. It's hard sometimes, but I think one thing that makes it easier is having raised my own child to adulthood. I don't think I would have had the patience if I hadn't learned it in parenting. Thanks for your online presence. I am losing my go-to teacher because he is going to a different school, but I have already made a plan to co-mentor with a first year teacher (she's been a para for years already). Hopefully that will be enough community to start with in the fall!

    • @elainal6847
      @elainal6847 День тому

This was also my first year teaching as a mid-work life career change. I specifically left a good career to help save our local school community with some stability and bring in light and love and the push back this year was outstanding. I agree about parenting really changing the approach to teaching and the level of patience I have. This year my guts were wrenched out by the end of year state test. My state apparently doesn't set the # of questions needed to pass until after the test has been taken so many of my kids who embraced the love and gained the confidence and pushed themselves to what would have been passing last year still got a failure on their record. Biggest take away for next year is to start and end on the ignore the standards and judge your growth on a personal level because you can't win a race if you are looking around instead of focus on your own lane.

It's so true that the seeds we plant are not going to be visible to us for quite some time. But when they come back to tell us what they remember about us or email us about the time and effort we put in for them and how they felt safe coming into our classroom, it will be worth it. Knowing I had an impact on a handful of kids and understanding that I can continue having an impact on more handfuls of kids makes my last 3 years worth it.

Thanks a bunch Reynolds for speaking something that I've been having mental gymnastics about for the past year. I think you hit the nail on the head for the deciding factor against wanting to move schools because you know you can "do right" by the kids that you're currently with. The kids will be alright, dont guilt yourself for anyone going through the same.

Another solution for younger grades, is to issue a certain amount of restroom tickets each day (3-5 tickets depending on their grade level and physical needs). They can only go to the restroom if they have a ticket. The tickets don't roll over to the next day they get the same amount of tickets each day. This way students are less likely to waste their ticket on playing in the restroom because they know once all their tickets are gone for the day they can't go to the restroom. Also, you could include a reward for the students that don't use up all of their tickets before a certain time of the day (like maybe 10-20 minutes before dismissal if they still have at least 1 ticket left they can pull from the treasure box, the snack box, or have free time). You could even make it a class job where a responsibile student passes out the tickets each day (all students should know how many tickets they are to get each day so they can be sure they have the right amount if tickets). Children with 504s that require them to go to the restroom frequently can participate too. With them you can up the amount of tickets or keep their tickets the same amount as everyone else but when they run out send them to the nurse instead of the restroom. Most school nurse's offices have restrooms. You may want to get the school nurse on board with this so she will just let them go in her office. You can also fill those students parents in on it. So they will know why their child is being sent to the nurse instead of the restroom. This way the 504 students that have to use the restroom frequently will get what they need without being singled out. Oh I almost forgot. The tickets are for their individual trips to the restroom. If the class has 1 or 2 whole classroom breaks during the day don't have them lose tickets for this. Instead strongly advised them to use the restroom during these times so they won't have to lose their restroom tickets.

First time viewing one of your videos. Great messages. I have been a sub in my small district for nearly 20 years. (Long story there ). I began at the elementary schools when my kids were young, then gradually moved up as they grew. Currently I limit my subbing to middle and high school. Just yesterday one of the high school seniors commented that I had seen her grow as a student since kindergarten. I routinely report back to the middle school teachers that those crazy kids did indeed grow and mature into fine individuals. THIS is what keeps me going.

I was hired at a elementary school the last week of March for 3rd grade Science. The school, in no other appropriate terms lied, and said that the teacher had retired. Actually, I found out the they had a teacher who just quit, then a first year teacher who said they had a family emergency and quit, then two lomg term subs, mixed with other subs. If that were not enough the math teacher had taken maternity leave and the had had subs in there dor awhile. I was able to spend two days on campus before taking over and the 3rd graders were out of control. They were out of control in Art, in PE, and in lunch. They were somewhat ok I'm ELA (she was a first year teacher but had been there the whole year). They were the best with the math teacher. When I talked with the students they said they behaved best in there because she was mean and could take away their recess. I was able to get some really flgood work done, in fact, the last district assessment I had 100 percent pass (photosynthesis). I was, however, never able to meet the principal's expectations of having all students in their seats at all time at no higher level of voice than 1. I followed all of their procedures for student issues up tonthe point where they take over, I even tried ever strategy the math teacher suggested. The more I did it their way the worse it got. Then two of the students said, well we know you won't be here long so I don't have to listen to you. I had no support, no training on the corrective reading they had me do (I learned how to do it on UA-cam myself) and they came in my room maybe 2 times one of which I basically begged for a visit. Then, last week on Monday they asked me to the office a 310 to tell me not only would I not be coming back, but that Tuesday was my last day. Today is the last day of school. I asked what I did that was so awful I couldn't at least finish the school year. She said she had a timeline to keep. I asked her what the issue was and she said I was distracted. That I talked on my cell phone too much during planning and lunch. She didn't even say that it was classroom management issues. I asked to visit other classrooms for tips, I asked for a copy of the book they use for their system and they never gave it to me. I believe now that they never intended on keep me. They invested zero into me. I was there essentially six weeks in a situation that was extreme. I left a good post, with an already guaranteed spot next year, because this was an "A" that has tons of private community support (money). Now I am left looking for a new job. I am writing this because I am frustrated l, I don't understand how anyone would have achieved her goals in just a few weeks, and to be honest just to let people know that these "A" schools are not ehat they seem.

You saying show the students how much they've grown.. I did a new thing for the end of year NWEA testing where I madeit a competition of growth. I told the students that I would reward the class with the most growth from the Winter to the Spring tests. It was wild how hard my students tried. And I got to congratulate them on their effort, even if they are still only reading on a 5th grade level as a 10th grader. It made me so proud and so sad to be leaving behind this group of students. But there are students everywhere who need me. Thank you

I truly needed to hear this! Students are resilient and I like to believe that I too can be resilient when thinking about what do I want for myself as an educator, do I feel supported within the community I am teaching in, and if not, where can I go to truly make a difference? I do hope next year will be a year in which I can find joy in teaching again because I do love this profession and interacting with other students as well as families

Thank you for posting this, CJ. It is true that some seeds germinate right away, and others require extra soil and nutrients over time. There will always be victories in the classroom.

Definitely needed to hear this this morning. I've been at the same school for 4 years and I recently was informed I won't have my contract renewed due to low student enrollment. I was pretty upset about it, but hearing your considerations about having a core community of reliable people, I realize that it's probably for the best and it's good for me to move on and find an institution that has a more positive work environment. The intro about planting seeds also puts the work into perspective. I suspect these are things many teachers rationally know but it's easy to get caught up in self-defeat and feeling of failure. Thanks for posting this!

I feel for you. We lost two great young teachers due to low student enrollment. Keep your head up, and it will work out in the end.

John, i’m so sorry to hear that your contract wasn’t renewed. I love your outlook though, and I’m praying that you really do find some thing that is more suiting to you and helps you to unlock that teacher that’s in you that you were called to be. if I can help with anything Please reach out and let me know. I’d be happy to do so.✌🏽

Excited to be switching to a new school, district, and content area (switching to K-5 music from 5th grade math) for my second year teaching. My first year had its fair share of wins and losses, but definitely looking forward to my new position!
